Key Scripture: Mark 10:17-22
“As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. ‘Good teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’ ‘Teacher,’ he declared, ‘all these I have kept since I was a boy.’ Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.”
Introduction:
This encounter powerfully illustrates the tension between earthly riches and spiritual priorities. The rich young man approaches Jesus with a question about eternal life, revealing his moral sincerity but also his attachment to material wealth.
Background:
The rich young man is an exemplary figure by societal standards—moral, wealthy, and respectful. Yet, his story is a cautionary tale about the potential spiritual hindrance of wealth. Jesus’ response to his question goes beyond the observance of the law to challenge the very foundation of his values and identity.
Reflection:
- Attachment to Wealth: Reflect on your own life. What possessions or pursuits might be keeping you from fully following Jesus? How does your attachment to material things affect your spiritual life?
- Total Surrender: Jesus asks the young man for complete surrender—selling all he has and giving to the poor. What might Jesus be asking you to surrender? Consider areas of your life that require greater trust and commitment to God.
- The Cost of Discipleship: The young man walks away sad, unable to give up his wealth. Think about the cost of discipleship. What are you willing to give up to gain eternal life?
Today’s Challenge:
- Personal Inventory: Make a list of your “treasures” and evaluate how they influence your spiritual journey. Are they hindrances or helpers to your faith?
- Act of Giving: Identify something of value to you—time, resources, or skills—and find a way to give generously to someone in need as a practical step of loosening the hold of material wealth on your life.
- Spiritual Disciplines: Commit to a spiritual discipline that fosters dependency on God, such as fasting, prayer, or sacrificial giving, to cultivate a heart more attuned to God’s kingdom.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to see where I am like the rich young man, holding on to things that prevent me from fully following You. Grant me the courage to let go of worldly wealth and comfort, that I may gain eternal treasures in Your kingdom. Teach me to live a life marked by generosity and sacrifice, following the example of Christ, who gave everything for us. Amen.
Closing Thought:
As you consider the story of the rich young man, challenge yourself to examine the role of wealth in your own life. Let his encounter with Jesus inspire you to prioritize your spiritual well-being over earthly gains, embracing the fullness of life that Jesus offers to those who follow Him wholeheartedly.
