The Identity of Jesus
Jesus Christ is celebrated and worshiped by Christians as God incarnate. God sent His son in human form to change the world. Jesus is the second person of the Holy Trinity; Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Born in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago, His life was prophesied in the Scriptures long before His birth.
Biblical Foundation: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Which means: ”God with us”). – Isaiah 7:14
This prophecy from Isaiah was fulfilled through Jesus’ birth; emphasizing His divine nature and His mission on Earth.
Jesus’ Birth and Early Childhood
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, to the Virgin Mary. The account of the miraculous nature of Jesus’ birth is recounted in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The gospels provide details of his mother Mary, and the role of Joseph as his earthly father.
Not soon after Jesus’ birth His family fled to Egypt to get away from King Herod’s decree to kill all young male children around Bethlehem. Herod’s decree was specifically focused on killing Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God. Herod feared this child and the prophecy of his birth and life.
When Herod was dead, Joseph was told by angels that it was time to return to Nazareth where Jesus grow up and was taught the Hebrew faith from Mary and Joseph. At twelve, Jesus and His family traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover.
Not yet 13, Jesus was not considered qualified to enter the Temple but He was drawn there. He separated from His parents and was later found in the Temple listening to the teachers and asking them questions. Those at the Temple were astonished by His understanding of the Torah at such a young age. This event is recorded in Luke 2:41-52.
The Ministry of Jesus
Jesus began His public ministry at the age of thirty, and for three years, He traveled, preached, taught, and performed miracles. His teachings focused on the Kingdom of God, calling people to repentance and a transformative life of love, mercy, and humility.
Key Teaching: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33
Jesus taught that prioritizing God’s Kingdom and living righteously should be the focus of our lives.
The Miracles of Jesus
During His ministry Jesus performed miracles; from healing the sick to calming storms and feeding thousands were signs of His divine authority and His compassion for humanity. Each miracle He performed was a demonstration of God’s power and a presentation of the Kingdom of God.
An example of one of His miracles occurred while teaching His disciples. The disciples were all in a boat in the Sea of Galilee. They were escorting Jesus to the other side of the sea. Night had fallen and although it was dark and stormy Jesus slept in the bow of the boat without a concern. The disciples began to panic and they were afraid and sure they would all be killed. They awoke their teacher and shared their concern. Jesus appeared unaffected. He was not worried at all by the fierceness of the storm. He stood up and miraculous stopped the winds. The disciples were amazed by what Jesus had done, it was a miracle.
“Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!'” – Matthew 8:26-27
These miracles were not just displays of power but messages of hope and restoration.
The Sacrifice of Jesus
Jesus’ ministry did not last long, it was a mere three years. Jesus was arrested for His teachings. His teachings were considered blasphemy as He proclaimed to be the Messiah. He was arrested and the Roman’s killed Him by crucifixion. The culmination of Jesus’s earthly ministry was His crucifixion, death, and resurrection. This death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of all humanity, offering everyone the opportunity for redemption and a restored relationship with God.
Biblical Significance: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
This verse perhaps best captures the essence of Jesus’s mission and the depth of God’s love for us.
The Resurrection and Its Impact
Jesus’s resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith; it confirms His divinity and provides believers with the hope of eternal life. Through His resurrection, Jesus defeated death and offers life eternal to all who follow Him.
Jesus died on the cross and His family buried Him in a tomb. After three days His body was gone from the Tomb. He had miraculous risen from His death bed to the heavens. The disciples were astonished even though Jesus and foretold of His death and resurrection.
Resurrection Power: “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” – Matthew 28:6
The empty tomb is a testament to the power of God and the truth of Jesus’s promises.
